How To Keep Your New Year’s Resolution

New Year's Resolution

Making a New Year’s resolution is a tradition, and breaking it seems to be a tradition as well. Each year, you come up with a list of goals you’re going to accomplish, but by the time February rolls around, you completely forget about it. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. Get some tips on how to set and follow through on your goals this year.

Think SMART

One reason you fail to reach your goal each new year is the fact that you fail to make the right one. Instead of making vague resolutions, start the year off right by making a SMART goal. Smart stands for:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

That means you shouldn’t just say, “I want to get healthy.” Instead, come up with a goal like, “I want to lose 60 pounds in the next year.”

Make a Plan

If you don’t create a plan, you’ll be destined to fail. Your plan should include a cue, routine, and reward. Let’s say you want to start running this year. That’s a great New Year’s resolution to make since it’s a way to get healthier. Your cue to run would be putting on your exercise clothes. When you put those clothes on, you know it’s time to run. Start with the cue. Put your running clothes on every day for a full week, but don’t leave your house. Just get used to your cue. Then, take the following step the next week. Put on those running clothes and take a walk around the block.

Keep taking small steps until you are running.

But what about that reward? It can be anything that gives you pleasure, as long as it doesn’t derail your progress. Treat yourself to a small piece of dark chocolate or take a nice hot shower with your favorite products. Brainstorm ideas until you come up with a reward that works for you.

Think About Potential Hurdles

Life happens, and that means that roadblocks will get in your way from time to time. Think about what those might be, and make a plan to overcome them. Also, remember that you will make mistakes from time to time. Don’t let a mistake prevent you from reaching your goals. If you make a mistake, get right back at it immediately. That will keep you motivated as you march toward your goal.

You’re going to follow through on your resolution this year. That means you need a reward. How about a new vehicle from Nissan of San Marcos in San Marcos, Texas? A Nissan is the perfect reward for a job well done. It sure is better than a piece of dark chocolate or a hot shower.
