About Cheatham Street Warehouse
For those who haven’t been to the Cheatham Street Warehouse before, this a prime venue that has been hosting music since 1974. It began when Kent Finlay and Jim Cunningham rented an old, creaky warehouse by the railroad tracks and transformed it into a music venue. Opening night featured Freda (Marcia Ball) and the Firedogs, an Austin band with music that can be described as “hippie country,” playing to an overflowing crowd.
The Cheatham Street Warehouse quickly became a destination for progressive country music. Over the years, this became the very first place George Strait and the Ace in the Hole Band played a gig as a group and where Stevie Ray Vaughan had weekly gigs before rising to fame.
The location closed briefly in the 1990s. In March 2006, Gregg Andrews and his wife, Vikki Bynum, bought the property so it wouldn’t be bulldozed. By 2010, the nonprofit Cheatham Street Music Foundation raised enough money to purchase it, the goal of Andrews and Bynum. Randy Rogers bought the property in late 2016 after having been part of it through the years, and he continues to run it.
